Answers to Common Questions about ISI
How do I apply for ISI?
See our eligibility requirements.
How much does ISI cost?
Tuition for ISI is free. In addition, students will receive a stipend for the month of August to help offset housing and living expenses. The stipend is equivalent to one month of a University Fellowship, or approximately $2,565 USD for ISI 2018. Depending on your country of origin and the tax treaties that the US holds with your country, US taxes may be deducted from your stipend. The exact amount varies, but a typical tax withholding is around $300-$400 US dollars. The stipend is paid on August 31, so it is important for students to arrive with enough money to handle set up expenses. We suggest bringing at least $1,000 USD.
What classes are offered?
Please see our Instruction page.
Does ISI offer housing?
No, but students may apply to live on-campus in Graduate Housing for a fee during the month of August on a first-come, first-served basis. Details about housing are listed on the student acceptance form.
Participants are responsible for arranging their own housing and have the options of living on- or off-campus. Limited on-campus housing for participants and their families will be available in Engelhart Hall during the month of August. Students who wish to live in Engelhart in August and/or the academic year must fill out a Graduate Housing Application and return it to the Graduate Housing Office. More details about how to apply will be sent to students who indicate that they will live on campus.
How long does the program last?
Programming runs from July 30, 2018 to August 31, 2018. Students arrive in Chicago on Monday, July 3oth (or before). Orientation tours take place on Tuesday, July 31, and testing on August 1. You must be present for the orientation tours and testing to participate in ISI. Classes end on Friday, August 31st, and the farewell banquest is held in the first week of September.
I am bringing my family with me, can they attend ISI as well?
Only students who are nominated by their departments are eligble to attend ISI classes. However, spouses, partners, and children of ISI students are encouraged to attend all ISI social events.
