Eligibility Information for Undergraduate Students

The Graduate School sponsors English Language Programs services with support from other schools in the university for the purpose of assisting its students and postdoctoral fellows with their graduate coursework and teaching responsibilities. Programs are designed with the needs of graduate students in mind, and undergraduates are not normally permitted to register for Linguistics 380 classes or encouraged to use ELP services.

However, in special circumstances, undergradutes may register for a Linguistics 380 course through the University's CAESAR program in the first week of the quarter with a permission number. To obtain a permission number, undergraduate students must first get written permission from their undergraduate academic advisor to take the course for credit. They must also schedule a time to meet in person with the Director of English Language Programs to see if their language proficiency is a good fit for the course. Once both these requirements have been met, English Language Programs will evaluate the student's request and weigh it against demand from TGS students and scholars. If the program deems that space is available for undergrads in a particular session, the student will be given a permission number to allow him or her to enroll via CAESAR. Undergraduates may not register before the start of the quarter.

Undergraduates who wish to apply for any other services, such as tutoring or NativeAccent software, or enroll in a course as an auditor instead of as a registered student, may apply as a Northwestern affiliate on our registration page.
