Masters Students: are you enrolled in a TGS or Non-TGS program?
Students enrolled in a TGS masters program are students of The Graduate School and have priority over other Northwestern affiliates for ELP services.
Non-TGS masters programs are overseen directly by another school in the university, such as the Pritzker School of Law, the Feinberg School of Medicine, the McCormick School of Engineering, the Medill School of Journalism, the Bienen School of Music, or the School of Education. Students in these programs are considered to be Northwestern affiliates in regards to eligibility for ELP services. Please see the affiliates eligibility information page for more information registering for ELP services as an affiliate. If you are unsure whether your masters program is a TGS program, please contact our staff at elp@northwestern.edu, and we will assist you.
Information for TGS Masters students on registration for services:
All of our services (group classes, tutoring, and NativeAccent) are offered as non-credit courses. These courses will appear on your transcript: the possible grades are "satisfactory" and "unsatisfactory." Although you will receive a grade, the grade will not affect your GPA. Because these course carry zero-credit, they will also not affect your courseload. No tuition will ever be charged for these courses.
GROUP CLASSES: All TGS Masters students who wish to participate in Linguistics 380/381 group classes MUST enroll via CAESAR. Auditing of classes is not permitted for TGS graduate students. This requirement has been added by The Graduate School in order to create a stable community of learners in the classroom with similar levels of proficiency, who can network and learn from one another. It also ensures that all learners are equally committed to the work of the class.
To register on CAESAR for open sections of our group classes (Linguistics 380 or 381), you will need a permission number. To get a permission number, you will need to fill out our online application form during CAESAR registration or add/drop week. Links to these forms are on our registration page. Once you have a permission number, you will need to search for the class in CAESAR and add it using your permission number. If the class is full and you are not able to use your permission number on CAESAR, contact our staff for assistance.
TUTORING AND ONLINE TRAINING: For all other services, such as tutoring (Linguistics 482) and NativeAccent software (Linguistics 483), TGS Masters students may register online during the TGS student registration period on our registration page. Once your application has been accepted, you will be sent more information by email about selecting an appointment time or getting an online software account. You will also be automatically enrolled in Linguistics 482 or 483 on CAESAR: you will not need a permission number for these courses.
