Eligibility Information for PhD and MFA Students

Full-time PhD and MFA students are given first priority for English Language Programs services, in order to help them improve their communication for participation in their graduate coursework, teaching, and research activities. PhD/MFA students may register in advance for Linguistics 380/381 group classes, and have first priority for spots in Linguistics 482 (Individual Tutoring), Linguistics 483 (NativeAccentâ„¢ Online Speech Training), and the EDGE program.

All PhD/MFA students who wish to participate in Linguistics 380/381 group classes MUST enroll via CAESAR. Auditing of classes is not permitted for TGS graduate students. This requirement has been added by The Graduate School in order to:

Important! Please note:

1. To register for open sections of Linguistics 380 or 381, you will need a permission number. To get a permission number, you will need to fill out our online application form during CAESAR registration or add/drop week. Links to these forms are on our registration page. Once you have a permission number, you will need to search for the class in CAESAR and add it using your permission number. If the class is full and you are not able to use your permission number on CAESAR, contact our staff for assistance.

2. Students enrolling in the Integrated Academic Skills Program follow a different process and should follow the instructions in their enrollment e-mail for how to select group class sections and tutoring appointments.

3. For all other services, such as tutoring and NativeAccent software, PhD and MFA students may register online during the TGS student registration period on our registration page. PhD and MFA students are automatically given first priority in registration for all these services as well.
