SCHEDULE FOR THE CURRENT QUARTER:
Tutoring small group sessions for Fall Quarter 2009 are listed below. For more information on how to sign up for a small group in Winter Quarter of 2010, please see the information on our tutoring application page.
Tutoring small groups meet weekly for one hour, beginning in the first week of the fall quarter and continuing through the the end of the quarter (through Reading Week but not Exam Week).
All group sessions are held in the Linguistics Department at 2016 Sheridan Road (in Room 205 or Room 202). You will be informed of your exact room location during online registration.
Topics that will be offered in the fall quarter include:
Conversation-
Mon 12:00 PM, Tues 11:30 AM, Wed 4:00 PM, Thu 10:30 AM
Practice in informal English conversation, including rules of conversational behavior, vocabulary, sociolinguistic cues, idioms, common phrases, and more.
Idioms and Vocabulary-
Fri 12:30 PM
Expand your vocabulary by learning new words, idioms, phrases, and sayings. Discuss differences in meaning among related words, including tone and formality.
Presentations-
Fri 11:00 AM
Practice organizing and presenting information to an American audience.
Pronunciation/Sounds of English-
Mon 4:00 PM, Tues 11:00 AM, Wed 1:00 PM , Thu 10:00 AM
Practice in speaking clearly. Learn about the sound structure of American English. Work on pronunciation, intonation, linking, rhythm, word stress, sentence stress, and more.
SPEAK Test Preparation-
Mon 1:00 PM, Thu 3:00 PM
Become familiar with the format of the SPEAK test and practice the language skills needed to perform well, such as narration, recommendations, comparisons, giving directions, giving opinions, describing a graph, and making a group presentation.
Writing-
Tue 10:30 AM, Wed 10:30 AM, Fri 1:00 PM
Take part in a writing workshop for academic writing tasks in the classroom and in general academic culture. Bring in your written work for peer and tutor feedback.
