Hire a tutor to work with you one-on-one

The following linguistics graduate students and TESOL professionals offer their services as private paid tutors independent of Northwestern University and its Linguistics Department. This information is provided for public convenience. The decision to use any particular private tutor, including any individual listed below, rests solely with the hiring party. Northwestern University does not warrant, endorse, or guarantee the quality, appropriateness, or any other aspect of any service provided by a private tutor.

Tutoring fees vary, but the range for one-on-one services is generally $25-$60 per hour.

If you are interested in setting up an appointment, please contact one of the tutors listed below directly. Tutors may be contacted either by telephone or e-mail, see specific listings for details. Please be aware that none of our tutors accept wire transfers as a method of payment, or payment in the form of a personal check in an amount that exceeds the cost of services.

Tutors should normally be able to respond within 3 business days. If you do not receive a response within that time, please contact our staff at elp@northwestern.edu and let us know which tutor you are trying to contact so that we can help.

Jennifer A. Alexander, PhD
Jen received her PhD in Linguistics from Northwestern in 2010 after earning BAs in English and Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley. Jen has nearly a decade of TESOL teaching and tutoring experience. She has taught multiple NU ESL courses, and has tutored many students, on English pronunciation; communication, culture, and conversation; academic and business writing/editing/proofreading; English proficiency exams; and academic presentations. Anne Delaney, MA
Anne has an MA TESOL from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She has over 15 years of experience in English language teaching and coaching, and taught for many years at UCSD in San Diego, CA. The founder of Excelsior English, she customizes classes and tutoring for each student and client, and helps to create more confidence, clarity and success for students and employees in their professional, academic and personal lives. Editing Press
Editing Press is a small company of published academics from Oxford and Cambridge Universities who provide editing, proofreading, and translation services of the highest standard to postgraduates and fellow academics. Clients vary from professors with major book projects to master's and doctoral students who are looking for bespoke editing services for their dissertations and theses. All work is covered by an Infinite Revisions Policy, which guarantees as many rounds of editing as necessary to take the manuscript to its final and polished form. This policy is particularly useful if, for instance, thesis examiners or journal referees require changes to a manuscript. References available upon request.

Steve Fix, PhD
Steve received his PhD in Linguistics from Northwestern after earning a BA at the University of Chicago. While at Northwestern, he taught several TESOL courses, including those focusing on pronunciation, basic communication and conversational skills, and academic writing/editing and presentation. He also served as Northwestern's ELP Tutor, assisting students with both academic presentation skills and everyday communication.

Kathleen Hall, BA
Kathleen has a BA in Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently pursuing a PhD at Northwestern University. She has been working with English language learners for 10 years, and has taught several TESOL courses at NU, including pronunciation, test preparation, and academic presentations. She has also been a tutor in the ELP for several years, and has helped students improve their fluency, conversation, pronunciation, cultural knowledge, and presentation skills. Jennifer Kerrigan, MA
Jennifer received her MA TESL from Northeastern Illinois University and has enjoyed teaching ESL to international students for 8+ years. She has specialized in preparing students for admission to undergraduate and graduate programs in the US. Jennifer assists students with academic writing, pronunciation, and presentation skills to help ensure their academic success. Additionally, Jennifer has worked with immigrant students in building communicative competence, specifically for the workplace. Currently, Jennifer combines her TESL expertise with her background in K-12 education to prepare K-12 teachers in obtaining ESL endorsement in the state of Illinois.

Jenna has PhD in Linguistics and and an MA in Speech-Language Pathology; she recently completed her PhD at University of South Florida. She has been working with English learners for over eight years, including Northwestern's English Language Programs. She is the founder of Native Advantage, a company offering conversation, pronunciation, writing, and presentation services over the internet, so learners have access to native English speakers no matter where in the world they live.

Victoria Reeves, BA, TESOL Certified
Victoria provides private tutoring for international MA students enrolled in the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. Victoria has a BA in English Composition from Beloit College, and a TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) Certification from the English Language Center in London.
