2010 Weinberg College Convocation Speaker: Steven J. Harper
Steven J. Harper teaches at Northwestern University’s School of Law and its Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, where the undergraduate student body recently selected him for the 2009-2010 Faculty & Administrator Honor Roll. He is a contributing writer to The American Lawyer (Am Law Daily) and the author of two non-fiction books: Crossing Hoffa: A Teamster’s Story (a Chicago Tribune “Best Book of the Year” in 2007) and Straddling Worlds: The Jewish-American Journey of Professor Richard W. Leopold (2008). His first novel, The Partnership, was published in May 2010. His author website is: www.stevenjharper.com.
After graduating from Northwestern in 1976 with combined B.A./M.A. degrees in economics (with distinction and Phi Beta Kappa - junior year election), he attended Harvard Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1979. He recently retired after twenty-five years as a litigation partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been included in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America. He has been a member of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors since 2000 and is a founding member of the committees that endowed the Richard W. Leopold Professorship in American history and the Leopold Fellowship program for undergraduates.
Steve and his wife, Kit (WCAS ’77, GS ‘79), have three adult children (one of whom is a Weinberg alumnus) and two grandsons.
